Porth Kennels' Retirees

One of the hardest things about breeding is retiring our beloved adults. It is especially hard because they get homesick when they leave us. Adopting an adult is not always easier than training a new puppy. It is different but very rewarding.

We have very strict adoption requirements. We offer our females for adoption at approximately 5 years of age. Males will stay with us a little longer. There may be younger dogs available that don't meet our breeding requirements.

1. Adoptive family MUST have another small dog, preferably a mini Dachshund. Our dogs are never alone, so a "pack" is required. We will occassionally approve a pair of retired adults.

2. Adoption fees are small - usually $300-$500. Some retirees have been spayed or neutered. Situations vary depending on the dog, age, etc.

3. We give preference to families who are Porth Kennels' former customers, and those who have experience adopting a "non-puppy".

4. Fenced in backyard is REQUIRED and must be secure so a small dog cannot escape. Retirees are initially a flight risk, because they are in a new environment.

5. The process for a Porth retiree to adjust to a new home can take 3-4 months. We are available for support 24/7.

6. Veterinarian reference is required.
